Hurricanes

Hurricanes are cyclones of tropical origin with wind speeds of at least 74 miles (103.6 kilometers) per hour... The word hurricane comes from the Central American TAINO language, meaning “God of Evil”.

The storms are called Typhoons in the western Pacific, cyclones in the Indian Ocean, and bagnios in the Philippines, and all have the same structure as Hurricanes.

Hurricanes can be thought of as heat engines in which air is drawn in at low levels toward the center of low pressure, rises in the eye wall, and either sinks into the eye or spirals away from the center.

Hurricane season is generally from May through November, with a maximum number of storms occurring in August and September.
